Radio is an entertainment and information form that goes back to the late 19th century. Unlike many other forms that died out, radio is still highly prevalent in the everyday lives of millions of people in the world. In today’s guide we talk to you about Christian radio.

What is Christian Radio?

Christian radio refers to radio stations that transmit programs with a Christian message. A large number of Christian radio stations (particularly specifically Catholic stations) are commercial in nature, like most non-Christian radio stations.

Other Christian radio stations however are non-profit stations that are usually supported financially by their listeners and Church groups and organizations. Non-profit Christian radio stations are usually more interested in evangelizing the Christian message rather than trying to package their programs for maximum commercial gain.

Music and talk/news programs have a Christian influence and will be from the perspective of Christians. They may have a particularly political or economic angle to them.

What Types of Christian Radio Stations are there?

There are two main types of Christian radio stations – music stations and talk radio programs.

Christian music stations aren’t that dissimilar to non-Christian commercial radio stations in that they play a range of music from different genres. However the music played is generally by popular Christian artists. Some of the music genres that are commonly played on various Christian radio stations include contemporary genres such as rock and roll, pop, alternative, country as well more traditional Christian genres like gospel and worship music.

Currently some of the most popular artists that are played regularly on Christian radio include: Amy Grant, Third Day, Sandi Patty, Switchfoot, Bill Gaither Trio and Steven Curtis Chapman – to name just a few. They generally try and mix a variety of old and new Christian music to appeal to a wider audience.

Not all Christian radio stations play music however, and there are numerous Christian talk radio stations that can include live, call in shows where you can speak with various well-known Christian leaders both locally and nationally. Some Christian radio stations will largely be preaching and teaching programs. Popular programs include Focus on the Family with Dr. James Dobson and Living Way with Pastor Jack Hayford.

Further still there are Christian radio drama programs – and while drama radio has almost died in the mainstream world it – it is still prevalent and popular within Christian radio.

A large number of Christian radio stations incorporate both music and talk shows in their programs. One thing they have in common though is a purpose to spread the word of Christianity and provide programs that specifically cater to the interests of Christians.

Christian Radio in the USA and Abroad

The largest base for Christian radio is in the USA where it is highly prevalent and there are over 1,600 different Christian radio stations across the country. Some of the Christian radio stations are very small local ones whereas others are part of large national networks.

Christian radio broadcasters tend to purchase lots of small broadcast translators to help make their network stretch across a large region. Some of the best examples of this are Moody Radio, WAY-FM Network and Air 1.

Christian radio is also expanding around the world, and is becoming much more common in countries such as the UK and Australia. United Christian Broadcasters is a large international Christian radio broadcaster that has stations based in Albania, Australia, Canada, Denmark, New Zealand and the UK.

Most Popular Christian Radio Stations

With so many Christian radio programs being broadcast every single day in the USA and around the world, it is hard to know which ones to listen to. However, there are some firm favorites amongst the Christian community which we shall look at.

Peter Janetzki is an international Christian talk show where he covers hard topics from a Christian perspective. Whereas Praise in the Night is a popular call-in Christian talk show that is hosted by Steve Solomon.

For those interested in Christian radio drama – Adventures in Odyssey is a popular scripted comedy and drama program specifically for children.

Finally, if good-quality Christian music is what you’re after then K-LOVE, Hope 103.2 and Air 1 are three of the most listened to radio stations.
